#UNWTOElections:Georgia’s Pololikashvili Wins UNWTO Secretary General Race


Georgia’s Permanent Representative to the World Tourism Organization, His Excellency Zurab Pololikashvili has won the race to become the new Secretary General of the UNWTO.

H.E. Pololikashvili beat his closest contender Mr Walter Mzembi from Zimbabwe 18-15 votes in the second round of elections after both had emerged the two leading candidates with 8 and 11 votes respectively at the 105th UNWTO Executive Council held in Madrid, Spain.

Thirty three 33 Executive Council members with voting rights went to the polls. He will take over from the highly respected and revered Dr. Taleb Rifai whose tenure at the world tourism body comes to an end later this year after an eight-year spell as its Secretary General.

H.E. Zurab Pololikashvili who is also the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Georgia to Spain, Algeria and Morocco by his statement of intent during his campaign is expected to put “emphasis on concrete projects with tangible outcomes to further support members of UNWTO in an era of innovation, knowledge-sharing and entrepreneurship’’ and for “a shift in the internal working of the organization to focus on the same goal.”
