Tourism Minister Derek Hanekom has been fired along with Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan and seven other ministers. Former Deputy Minister of Tourism Tokozile Xasa will replace Hanekom, while Elizabeth Thabethe has been appointed new Deputy Minister of Tourism.
President Jacob Zuma made a statement announcing the changes late on Thursday evening
Gordhan was recalled from an investment roadshow earlier this week, which saw the rand weaken as speculation mounted that he would be fired.
Towards the end of last year, Hanekom tabled a motion of no confidence against in Zuma’s leadership at an ANC national executive committee meeting.
Former Home Affairs Minister, Malusi Gigaba, has been appointed Finance Minister. Gigaba has had a strained relationship with the tourism industry because of immigration regulations that have hurt arrivals into South Africa. He made the news yesterday when he said no changes would be made to South Africa’s child travel regulations. Hlengiwe Mkhize has been appointed Minister of Home Affairs.
Shortly after the news broke around midnight, Hanekom tweeted: “Well, it’s time for sleep now. Thank you so much for the hundreds of kind and supportive tweets! Be positive!”
